Banaras

...At that time, the city was called Varanasi, which is said to have meant the city located between the Varanasi River, which flows from west to east through the northern part of the city and joins the Ganga River, and the Asi River, a small river that flows east through the southern part of the city. In the early 11th century, it was incorporated under the influence of the Muslim Ghaznavid Empire, and became known as Banaras, pronounced in Urdu. In 1794, when it was annexed by the East India Company, it became known as Benares, pronounced in English.
