It is a language that belongs to the Slavic branch of the Indo-European language family, and, together with Serbian, Croatian, Slovenian, and Bulgarian, belongs to the South Slavic group, of which it is the closest to Bulgarian. In addition to being the official language of Macedonia, it is also spoken in parts of Bulgaria, Serbia, Montenegro, and Greece, with a total of 2 million speakers. It uses the Cyrillic alphabet. The written language (standard language) was established relatively recently, after World War II. Like Bulgarian, it has unique characteristics among the Slavic languages, such as the lack of case inflections for nouns and the infinitive form of verbs. ◇Macedonian in English.
