An abbreviation for Ente Nazionale Idrocarburi, an Italian state holding company established in 1953 with the aim of developing natural gas on the Po River. It subsequently expanded into oil refining, imported crude oil from the former Soviet Union, and expanded into the Middle East under a 50/50 profit-sharing system, attracting international attention for its aggressive policies, which also influenced Japan's oil policy.
