A representative historian of the Russian Empire during the Imperial period. Born into a clergyman's family in a rural area of Penza Province, he graduated from Moscow University (1865). In 1882, he obtained his doctorate for "The Boyarskaya Duma of Old Russia" and became a professor of Russian history at Moscow University. His lectures, coupled with his eloquence and wit, captivated many students and were published as "Lectures on Russian History" in four volumes (1904-11). This work, which covers Russian history from ancient times to the 19th century, has been translated into several foreign languages, including Japanese. His view of history differed from that of his contemporaries, who emphasized the role of the state in history, and placed importance on socio-economic factors, particularly emphasizing the significance of "colonization" in Russian history.
