...In central Honshu, they live in larch forests at altitudes of 1,400 to 1,800 meters. They build their nests underground, but then pile up pieces of dead plants to build cone-shaped mounds about 50 cm high, in which they raise their larvae in summer. Usually, one family lives in one mound, but sometimes they move freely between several mounds, making the whole family look like one. This is called a super colony. The world's largest super colony, stretching for about 20 km, is known to be located on the coast of Ishikari Bay in Hokkaido. ...
