Edwards, Jonathan
Born October 5, 1703 in East Windsor, Connecticut
[Died] March 22, 1758. Princeton, New Jersey. American pastor and theologian. After graduating from Yale University, he became a pastor in Northampton, Massachusetts, and led a religious revival movement called the Great Awakening. However, he was driven out of the church because of his strict demands on faith. He moved to the remote Stockbridge area around 1750, where he worked on missionary work among Native Americans while writing theological works. In 1758, he was appointed president of the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University), but died suddenly of smallpox just over a month after assuming his position. His works include God Glorified in the Work of Redemption (1731), Faithful Narrative of the Surprising Work of God (1737), Personal Narrative (c. 1740), Some Thoughts Concerning the Present Revival of Religion in New England (1742), A Treatise Concerning Religious Affections (1746), and The Great Christian Doctrine of Original Sin Defended (1758). He is particularly famous for A Careful and Strict Enquiry into ... Freedom of Will (1754), which denied free will from the standpoint of orthodox Calvinism.

Born: September 27, 1925, Bathory
[Died] April 10, 2013. British physiologist from near Cambridge. Full name Sir Robert Geoffrey Edwards. He studied zoology at Bangor University, a constituent university of the University of Wales, and graduated in 1951. He researched animal reproductive physiology at the Animal Genetics Laboratory at the University of Edinburgh, and obtained his doctorate in 1957. After working at the California Institute of Technology in the United States and the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) in the UK, he moved to the Department of Physiology at the University of Cambridge in 1963 and became a member of Churchill College. After moving to the NIMR in 1958, he worked on in vitro fertilization in humans, but the various conditions were quite different from those in other mammals, and he had difficulty succeeding. In 1968, when he learned of the existence of laparoscopy, he began clinical infertility treatment with the cooperation of Patrick Steptoe, an obstetrician-gynecologist at Oldham General Hospital, an authority on this technology. His paper on successful in vitro fertilization, published in Nature in 1969, attracted worldwide attention. On July 25, 1978, the world's first baby born through IVF, Louise Brown, was born. In 1980, he served as the research director of Burn Hall Clinic, a medical research facility specializing in infertility treatment, which he founded. In 2001, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Cambridge University and was also a recipient of the Lasker Award. In 2010, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his development of groundbreaking reproductive medical techniques such as in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer.
