aumônière (English spelling)

…An Assyrian relief from the 9th century BCE shows a monk carrying a square carrier bag similar to a handbag. From [Pocket]

...A small pouch for holding things attached to clothing, aprons, etc. The name comes from the Anglo-Norman pokete and the Middle English poket. In Western Europe, before pockets were added to clothing, people hid money and other items in the collar, hood, or sleeve. Nobles also wore silk pouches called aumonière hanging from their belts, while peasants and craftsmen wore hemp bags hanging from their belts to hold the tools they needed. In the 16th century, men began to wear decorative pouches called codpieces on their trousers to hold things.
