〘 noun 〙① A useful person. A person with a role. An important person. ※Bunmeihon Setsuyoshu (middle Muromachi period) "Yonin" ② In the Edo period, in the households of feudal lords, hatamoto vassals, and aristocrats, a person ranked next to an elderly vassal, in charge of finances and miscellaneous matters both inside and outside the household. Goyonin. ※Joruri Gara Sendaihagi (1785) 1 "Until now, we have served as many officials as chief retainers, small servants, attendants, and servants." ③ A job title in the Edo Shogunate. 〘名〙① 有用な人。はたらきのある人。要人。※文明本節用集（室町中）「用人ヨウニン」② 江戸時代、大名・旗本・貴族などの家で、老臣の次に位し、財用をあずかり、内外の雑事をつかさどったもの。御用人。※浄瑠璃・伽羅先代萩（1785）一「今までは御家老方、お小性・近習・用人なんど、あまた役人承り」③ 江戸幕府の職名。大奥のそばにある広敷(ひろしき)の長として広敷の役人を統括し大奥の事務をつかさどった御広敷御用人、将軍の正妻の御用を務めた御簾中様（御台様）御用人、将軍の娘で大名に嫁した御姫様の世話をした姫君様（姫君方）御用人、女中の世話をした女中方御用人などの種類があった。いずれも若年寄支配。④ 江戸時代、町の雑用・事務にあたった雇い人。※浮世草子・世間娘容気（1717）一「硯とりよせ鼻紙に一筆かいて〈略〉用人よび付」
