A village in Watarai County, central eastern Mie Prefecture. Population 8,607 (1995). Located on the right bank of the Miyagawa River estuary, the entire area is an alluvial lowland belonging to the Ise Plain, and surrounded by Ise City on three sides: north, east, and south. In the past, the area was home to Mikuriya and Osono of the Ise Grand Shrine, and the Oshioya Osono, which was located in the Ominato (present-day Ise City) area, included the village area, including Kobayashi, where salt was produced. During the Edo period, the area was also part of the Shogunate territory in addition to the Shinto shrine territory, and during the Kan'ei era (1624-44), the official residence of the Yamada Magistrate was moved from Aritaki (present-day Ise City) to Kobayashi. 三重県中央東部,度会(わたらい)郡の村。人口8607(1995)。宮川河口右岸に位置し,全域が伊勢平野に属する沖積低地で,北・東・南の三方を伊勢市に囲まれる。古くは伊勢神宮領の御厨(みくりや)や御薗が置かれた地で,大湊(現,伊勢市)一帯に設置されていた大塩屋御薗には小林(おはやし)など当村域も含まれ,製塩が行われていた。江戸時代は神宮領のほか幕府領もあり,寛永年間(1624‐44)には山田奉行の役宅が有滝(現,伊勢市)から小林に移された。
