...It occupies the toe of the boot-shaped Italian peninsula, and is long and narrow from north to south. In ancient times, the region was called Bruttium, but it has been called by its current name since the 7th century (before that, the part of the boot that is now the Salento Peninsula in Puglia, that is, the heel of the boot, was called Calabria). It consists of five provinces: Catanzaro, Cosenza, Reggio di Calabria, Crotone, and Vibo Valentia.
