Charing Cross Road

Other world-famous second-hand bookshops include Maggs and Kraus. Charing Cross Road in London, once the most popular second-hand bookshop district in Europe, was established by chance around 1900 and reached its peak of prosperity in the 1930s, but there is no trace of its past today. Meanwhile, in Japan, the world's oldest printed work with a known publication date, the Hyakumanto Dharani, was created in 770 (Hōki 1), and temples and shrines across the country published temple editions during the Heian, Kamakura, and Muromachi periods, but it was during the Edo period that many bookstores that also operated as publishing businesses began to appear.
