...A relic with a definite maker's name is the purple-petaled lacquer tray at Shojuraigoji Temple in Shiga Prefecture, which has a needle-written inscription on the bottom that reads "Made by Zhang Cheng." In the Ming dynasty, Zhang Cheng's son Degang produced lacquerware actively at the government-run Guoyuan factory during the Yongle period of Chengzu (1403-24). During the Xuande period (1426-35), the patterns became more complex, and carving techniques were more detailed, with unusual shapes appearing, and a trend toward excessive decoration. Around this time, a carving technique known as "hashima carving" began to appear in Japan....
