Edo language - Edogo

Japanese: 江戸語 - えどご

It means the language used mainly by the inhabitants of Edo, mainly townspeople, and does not refer to the language of the Edo period. However, as there is a view that the language of the Edo period is represented by early Kamigata dialect and late Edo dialect, the establishment of Edo dialect is considered to have occurred after the Horeki period (1751-64), and the period division can be said to be quite clear. In other words, in the literature, first of all, many joke books from the Horeki period onwards contained usages different from Kamigata dialect, and then in the humorous books of the Bunka and Bunsei periods (1804-30) and the human interest books from the Tenpo period (1830-44) onwards, the Kamigata dialect elements declined significantly.

江戸の住民，主として町人を中心として使われたことばの意で，江戸時代の言語を指すのではない。しかし，江戸時代のことばを，前期の上方語と後期の江戸語に代表させる見解があるように，江戸語の成立は宝暦(1751‐64)以降とされ，時期的な区分は，かなり明瞭といえよう。すなわち，文献資料の上では，まず宝暦以降の洒落本に上方語とは異なることばづかいが多く現れ，文化文政期(1804‐30)の滑稽本，天保(1830‐44)以降の人情本等に至ると，上方語的要素の減退は著しいとされている。
