A perennial plant of the Asteraceae family. It is a well-known alpine plant that grows in the high and subalpine regions of Europe. It grows to a height of 10-20cm and is covered entirely in soft white hairs. In summer, it produces 6-10 flower heads at the top of the stem, and below them are several star-shaped bracts covered with white hairs that look like petals. It is also cultivated for decorative purposes. There are several species of the same genus that grow wild in Japan, and among them, L. fauriei var. angustifolium , which grows on Mt. Tanigawa and Mt. Oze Shibutsu, and L. hayachinense , which grows on Mt. Hayachine, are the most similar to this edelweiss. Other species include L. japonicum , which has a somewhat wider distribution range, and L. shinanense , which grows on Mt. Kiso-Komagatake.
