Experimental Workshop

A multi-arts group active in the 1950s. In the field of art, its members included Yamaguchi Katsuhiro, Kitadai Shozo, painter Fukushima Hideko (1927-1997), artist Imai Naoji (1928-), and in the field of music, Takemitsu Toru, Yuasa Joji, music critic Akiyama Kuniharu (1923-1996), composer Fukushima Kazuo (1930-), musician Sonoda Takahiro (1928-2004), and photographer Otsuji Kiyoji. It carried out activities that transcended the fields of art, music, literature, photography, and dance, and held recitals that combined concerts and exhibitions.

The origins of the Experimental Workshop date back to 1948, shortly after the end of World War II, when Kitadai, Yamaguchi, and Fukushima Hideko participated in the Modern Art Summer Workshop (Ochanomizu, Tokyo) organized by the Japan Avant-Garde Artists Club, and the three met at the event and hit it off. The three shared a common awareness of avant-garde art, exhibiting their works at the Shichiyokai exhibition (Hokuso Gallery, Nihonbashi, Tokyo) that same year and holding a study group called "Toridan" at Kitadai's home. After 1949, Yamaguchi met Akiyama and Yuasa, and began to actively engage in a comprehensive arts movement that transcended the boundaries of art and music, which gained momentum when Takemitsu, Fukushima Kazuo, and others joined them.

The group was officially founded in August 1951. It was named "Experimental Workshop" by critic Shuzo Takiguchi, who admired many of the members. The first presentation of the group's work was in November of the same year, when the Yomiuri Shimbun asked them to produce an event related to a Picasso exhibition at the Nihonbashi Takashimaya department store in Tokyo. On this occasion, the group only performed a ballet called "The Joy of Living" by choreographer and dancer Takashi Masuda (1910-1996) and ballerina Momoko Tani, but from their second recital the following year in 1952, they began to use multiple media for their presentations, such as installing objects and lighting at contemporary music venues. The second recital featured the Japanese premiere of works by Messiaen and Bartók, and the third recital in the same year featured Yamaguchi's three-dimensional work "Vitrine." At the 5th recital in 1953, they exhibited a visual and audio piece using an "Auto Slide Projector" that combined a slide projector and an audio device. In 1954, they held the Japanese premiere of Schoenberg's works, including "Pierrot Lunaire," and continued these activities until 1957, when they essentially disbanded.

Contrary to the name "Experimental Workshop," the movement did not have a base studio, and it did not issue a manifesto or a dissolution announcement. Many members exhibited at the Yomiuri Independent Exhibition and often collaborated with artists who were not members, so the organization was very flexible and activities were not necessarily limited to a fixed group of members. Kitadai, who was an engineer by trade and well versed in quantum mechanics and aerodynamics, played an important role not only in mediating the different fields of art and music, but also in the pioneering attempt at the time to fuse art and technology. Later, Takemitsu and Yamaguchi became internationally active, and the "Experimental Workshop" gained a high level of recognition. However, because the scope of its activities was not limited to art and was diverse, it was not clearly positioned in representative exhibitions introducing Japanese contemporary art, such as "Avant-Garde Japanese Art 1910-1970" (1989, Centre Pompidou) and "Postwar Japanese Avant-Garde Art" (1994, Yokohama Museum of Art). Even when compared to the contemporary avant-garde art movement "Gutai" led by the Gutai Art Association, it is difficult to say that its reputation has been established, and its evaluation has remained a challenge for the art world in the future.

1950年代に活動した総合芸術集団。美術の分野では山口勝弘、北代省三(きただいしょうぞう)、画家福島秀子（1927―1997）、美術家今井直次（1928―　）、音楽の分野では武満徹(たけみつとおる)、湯浅譲二、音楽評論家秋山邦晴（1923―1996）、作曲家福島和夫（1930―　）、音楽家園田高弘（1928―2004）、そして写真家大辻清司(おおつじきよじ)などが参加、美術、音楽、文学、写真、舞踏などの分野を越えた活動を展開し、演奏会と展覧会をあわせたような発表会を開催した。

　実験工房の発端は第二次世界大戦後間もない1948年（昭和23）、日本アヴァンギャルド美術家クラブ主催の「モダンアート夏期講習会」（東京・お茶ノ水）に北代、山口、福島秀子が参加し、同会で知り合った3人が意気投合したことに始まる。3人は同年の「七燿会」展（北荘画廊、東京・日本橋）に出品したり、北代宅で研究会「トリダン」を開催するなど、前衛芸術への問題意識を共有する。また翌1949年以後、山口が秋山や湯浅と知り合ったことがきっかけで美術と音楽の垣根を越えた横断的な総合芸術運動に積極的に取り組むようになり、武満、福島和夫らの合流によって拍車がかかった。

　グループの正式な結成は1951年8月。参加メンバーの多くが私淑していた批評家滝口修造によって「実験工房」と命名された。初の作品発表は同年11月、東京・日本橋高島屋でのピカソ展開催に際して、読売新聞社からその関連イベントのプロデュースが依頼されたことによって実現する。このときは、振付師兼ダンサーの益田隆（1910―1996）とバレリーナの谷桃子によるバレエ『生きる悦(よろこ)び』を上演したにとどまったが、翌1952年の第2回発表会以後は、現代音楽の演奏会場にオブジェを設置したり照明演出を行うなど、複数のメディアを活用した発表が繰り広げられた。第2回発表会ではメシアンやバルトークなどの作品の日本初演が行われ、同年の第3回発表会では山口の立体作品『ヴィトリーヌ』が発表された。1953年の第5回発表会ではスライド映写機と音響装置を組み合わせた「オートスライド・プロジェクター」を用いた映像音響作品を出品。1954年には、『月に憑(つ)かれたピエロ』をはじめとするシェーンベルク作品の日本初演が実現し、これらの活動は1957年まで続いたが同年実質的に解散。

　「実験工房」という名とは裏腹に、この運動は拠点となる工房をもたず、また運動のマニフェストや解散宣言も発表されなかった。多くのメンバーが読売アンデパンダン展に出品し、またメンバー外の作家ともしばしば共同するなど、組織のあり方はきわめて柔軟で、活動はかならずしも固定メンバーだけに限定されてはいなかった。また技術者出身で、量子力学や航空力学に精通していた北代の存在は、美術と音楽という異分野の媒介のみならず、芸術とテクノロジーの融合という当時としては先駆的な試みでも重要な役割を果たした。後に武満や山口が国際的に活躍したこともあり、「実験工房」は高い知名度を得た。しかし活動範囲が美術に限らず多岐にわたっていたこともあり、日本の現代美術を紹介した代表的な展覧会として知られる「前衛日本の芸術1910―1970」（1989、ポンピドー・センター）や「戦後日本の前衛美術」（1994、横浜美術館）などでも明確な位置づけはされなかった。同時代の具体美術協会による前衛美術運動「具体」と比べても評価が定まっているとはいいがたく、その評価は後の美術界にとっても課題となっている。
