...A general term for brachiopods belonging to the class Articulata. The name comes from the fact that the shape of the two shells resembles the fruit of the plant Physalis.

There are about 100 genera of brachiopods alive today. As mentioned above, the living class Brachiopoda is divided into the subclass Inarticulata and the subclass Articulata. The former includes species such as the green-spotted clam Lingula unguis and the anchor clam Craniscus japonicus , while the latter includes species such as the striped clam Terebratulina japonica , the turtle clam Terebratalia coreanica , the striped clam Coptothyris grayi , the clam Laqueus rubellus , and the little clam Pictothyris picta .
