In the Kojiki and Nihon shoki myths, he is described as the son of Izanagi and Izanami-no-mikoto, and the father of Iwanaga-hime and Konohanasakuya-hime. In the Kojiki, he is called Oyamatsumi-no-kami, and in a fragment of the Iyo no Kuni Fudoki, he is called Oyamatsumi-no-kami. In his Kojiki-den, Motoori Norinaga introduces Kamo no Mabuchi's theory that Yamatsumi means Yamatsumochi, that is, a god who holds and governs the mountains. A lost piece of writing in the "Iyo no Kuni Fudoki" states that he came from Baekje during the reign of Emperor Nintoku, first settled on Mishima in Settsu Province (Mishima in Osaka Prefecture), and later moved to Mishima in Iyo Province (Omishima Town, Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture), where he was enshrined at the current Oyamazumi Shrine. The "Shaku Nihongi" also records him as the deity worshipped at Mishima Taisha Shrine in Omiya Town, Mishima City, Shizuoka Prefecture. The Oyamazumi deity currently enshrined at shrines around the country is a deity that has been commonly worshiped as a mountain god, regardless of any connection to these myths.
