Originally called Hirose Oimi Festival, during the Nara and Heian periods it was held as a four-time festival of the Shinto Shrine on the 4th of April and July every year at the same time as the Tatsuta Fuujin Festival, but now it is held only on the 4th of April as the annual festival of Hirose Shrine. Hirose Shrine is located in a low-lying marshland called Kawai (Kawamuri) at the confluence of the Yamato River system that irrigates the entire Nara Basin (currently Kawai, Kawai-cho, Kitakatsuragi-gun), and has been worshiping both the ancient god of flood control and the goddess of food. According to the shrine's legend, it was founded in the 5th year of the reign of Emperor Sujin as Ogozentsunokami, and was called Oimikami because he protects the five grains and strictly observes taboos when in charge of the meals of Amaterasu Omikami and the Emperor, and the festival was called Hirose Oimi Festival.
