…They are divided into Canaanite and Aramaic languages, and the oldest material in the former is Ebla, from the second half of the 3rd millennium BC, inscribed on a part of a large number of cuneiform tablets excavated at Tell Mardih in Syria in 1974-75. Its contents await further research. The hundreds of proper names found on cuneiform tablets excavated at Mari in the upper Euphrates are considered to reflect Amorite, and together with annotations and other information contained in correspondence between Canaanite princes and the king of Egypt (14th century BC) excavated at Amarna in Egypt, they are considered to be Canaanite materials from the 2nd millennium BC. In addition, Moabite (the language of a victory monument consisting of over 300 words erected in the 9th century BC by Mesha, the king of Moab, east of the Dead Sea) is also known.
