[Sarafan and Rubashka]
Clothing was also a part of the decline of tradition. Before the Russian Revolution, women in northern and central Russia usually wore a flaxen rubashka over a sarafan, while in southern Russia they wore a skirt called a ponyova under the rubashka. Young girls wore their long hair braided and decorated with ribbons, and married women were required to cover their hair with a hat called a kichka or kokoshnik.
