A village in Aso County, northeastern Kumamoto Prefecture. Population 1,823 (1995). Located on the eastern slope of Mt. Aso's outer rim, the gently undulating Namino Plateau spreads out at an altitude of 700-800m. The town is accessed by the Hohi Main Line and National Route 57. The cultivation of highland vegetables, primarily cabbage, and beef cattle are thriving, and the area also produces high-quality cedar timber. The plateau is a popular tourist destination for camping and spring bracken picking, and you can find a natural habitat of lily of the valley near Namino Station, the highest station in Kyushu (754m).
