Namino [village] - Namino
A village in Aso County, northeastern Kumamoto Prefecture. Population 1,823 (1995). Located on the eastern slope of Mt. Aso's outer rim, the gently undulating Namino Plateau spreads out at an altitude of 700-800m. The town is accessed by the Hohi Main Line and National Route 57. The cultivation of highland vegetables, primarily cabbage, and beef cattle are thriving, and the area also produces high-quality cedar timber. The plateau is a popular tourist destination for camping and spring bracken picking, and you can find a natural habitat of lily of the valley near Namino Station, the highest station in Kyushu (754m). 熊本県北東部,阿蘇郡の村。人口1823(1995)。阿蘇外輪山の東斜面に位置し,標高700~800mの起伏のゆるやかな波野高原が広がる。豊肥本線,国道57号線が通じる。キャベツを主とする高原野菜の栽培と肉牛飼育が盛んで,杉の良材も産する。高原はキャンプや春のワラビ採りでにぎわう行楽地で,九州で一番高い駅(754m)の波野駅付近にはスズランの自生地もみられる。【松橋 公治】
