[Amoebic dysentery]
The pathogen is Entamoeba histolytica (a type of protozoan belonging to the root pods), whose mature cysts are ingested with food and drink, causing infection in humans. The vegetative form (20-30 μm in length) emerges from a spherical cyst (6-20 μm in diameter) in the small intestine, moves in an amoeba-like manner, invades the mucous membrane of the large intestine, forms an ulcer, and causes the discharge of bloody mucus in the stool.
