Amati, N. (English spelling) AmatiN

...a family of violin makers active in Cremona, Italy. The founder, Andrea (1505/10-77/80), was from a wealthy aristocratic family and improved the shape and varnish of the Brescian school, establishing the modern forms of violins, violas, and cellos. He is considered the founder of the Cremonese school. Several of his instruments remain today. His two sons, Antonio (c. 1540-c. 1600) and Girolamo (Hieronymus, c. 1561-1630), also followed in their father's footsteps.
