The Church Fathers who were active from roughly the 1st century to the mid-2nd century, following the time of the apostles. They are also called the Post-Apostolic Fathers or the Direct disciple Fathers of the Apostles, and many of them are said to have had some kind of relationship with the apostles. Representative examples include Clement of Rome, Ignatius of Antioch, Polycarp of Smyrna, Papias of Hierapolis, the author of The Shepherd of Hermas, the author of The Epistle of Barnabas, and the author of The Teaching of the Twelve Apostles.
