Light year - Kounen (English spelling) light year

A unit of length used in astronomy. A light year is the distance that light travels in a vacuum in one year. Since the speed of light is about 300,000 kilometers per second, one light year is equivalent to about 9,460,730,472,580,800 meters. Light years are used primarily to express the distance to celestial bodies outside the solar system. The closest star to the solar system, Alpha Centauri (not visible from Japan), is 4.3 light years away from the sun, the radius of the galactic disk is about 50,000 light years, and the solar system is located about 30,000 light years from the center of the galaxy. The distance from our galaxy to the Andromeda Galaxy is about 2.3 million light years.

天文学で用いられている長さの単位の一つ。光が真空中を1年かかって進む距離を1光年という。光の速度は毎秒約30万キロメートルであるから、1光年は約9兆4600億キロメートル（1ly＝9460730472580800m）に相当する。光年はもっぱら太陽系外の天体までの距離を表すのに用いられている。太陽系にもっとも近い恒星ケンタウルス座α(アルファ)星（日本からは見えない）は太陽から4.3光年、銀河系円盤の半径は約5万光年で、太陽系は銀河系の中心から約3万光年のところに位置している。われわれの銀河系からアンドロメダ銀河までの距離は約230万光年である。
