Allgäu (English spelling)

The region is still dominated by industrial centres, such as Heilbronn on the lower Neckar and Ulm on the Danube. The Upper Swabian Hills are an agricultural region, but the southern highlands near the Alps are home to dairy farming, and Lake Constance and the Allgäu region to the east are also known as tourist destinations.

During the High Middle Ages, under the Staufen dynasty, Württemberg was part of the Duchy of Swabia, but in 1135 a noble family from near Stuttgart who had ruled the Neckar and Remus basins claimed the title of Count of Württemberg, and during the Interregnum (1254-73) following the extinction of the Staufen dynasty, they seized the imperial estates and expanded their domain to cover all of Swabia.
