Japanese: オヤマノエンドウ - おやまのえんどう

It is a legume semi-shrub about 10 cm tall that grows in alpine grasslands in the central Honshu region, and is one of the endemic plants of Japan. The leaves are odd-pinnate compound with 9-15 leaflets (illustration). The leaflets are narrowly ovate, 5-10 mm long, 2-4 mm wide, and covered with soft hairs on both sides. From June to August, one to two crimson-purple, butterfly-shaped flowers are produced at the end of the flower stalk. The flowers are about 2 cm long, with noticeable white spots at the base of the large standard petals, and the tips of the keel petals form short protrusions resembling a beak. The legumes are narrowly ovate, 3-4 cm long, about 7 mm wide, pointed at the tips, and somewhat densely covered with short white and black-brown hairs.
