This brown seaweed of the Fucus family grows in colonies on rocks in the intertidal zone of cold waters, repeatedly branching into a fan shape. The lower part of the body is cylindrical, while the upper part is somewhat flattened and the tip is spatula-shaped. It is yellowish brown to dark brown, and can grow to a height of 10 to 20 cm or more. It is distributed along the coast of Hokkaido and the Pacific coast of northern Honshu. The closely related species Fucus, which has a similar distribution, is leaf-like and has a midrib, making it easy to distinguish. The similarly named Ishige is also a brown seaweed that grows in the intertidal zone, but in a completely different taxonomic group, the Chlorella order, and has a small body height of 5 to 10 cm, and is found only in warm currents south of Ibaraki Prefecture, in contrast to the others.
