A city in south-central Niger. Known since the beginning of the 11th century as a town on the trans-Saharan caravan route, it was the capital of a kingdom established here from the 18th to the mid-19th century. After occupation by France in 1899, it also served as the colonial capital from 1922 to 1926. The surrounding area is a major groundnut producing area in the country, and it is the center of groundnut distribution and processing.
