A city in south-central Niger. Known since the beginning of the 11th century as a town on the trans-Saharan caravan route, it was the capital of a kingdom established here from the 18th to the mid-19th century. After occupation by France in 1899, it also served as the colonial capital from 1922 to 1926. The surrounding area is a major groundnut producing area in the country, and it is the center of groundnut distribution and processing. ニジェールの中南部の都市。11世紀の初め頃からサハラ横断の隊商路上の町として知られ,18世紀から19世紀半ばにかけては,この地に成立した王国の首都であった。また1899年にフランスに占領された後,1922年から26年まで植民地の主都でもあった。付近は同国の主要なラッカセイの産地で,ラッカセイの集散,加工の中心地になっている。また南北,東西に通ずる道路の交わる所で,交通の中心でもある。人口23万5605人(2012)。
