In Latin it is called Strigonium, and in German it is called Gran. It is a city in northern Hungary, located on the Danube River northwest of Budapest. It was first inhabited by the Celts, then became a Roman territory, and was briefly occupied by the Huns. In the 10th century, Hungarians (Magyars) arrived. The first king of Hungary, Stephen I, was crowned here, and it became the royal capital of the Árpád dynasty. An archbishopric was already established here at this time, and it remains the center of Catholicism in Hungary to this day. There are many historically important buildings, including the ruins of the 12th-century royal palace and the neoclassical Esztergom Basilica. Population: 29,751 (1991 estimate).
