1761‐1842 Yugoslav social worker. Although he was a lawyer, he dedicated his life to the liberation and civilization of the Serbian people in the Vojvodina region. In 1838, he established the Tekerianum Foundation in Buda (now Budapest) using his vast real estate holdings, and sent a total of 300 young people to university. The Foundation was managed by the local cultural organization Matica Srpska, but in 1878 the Serbian Orthodox Church took over, and it ceased operations after World War I. The extensive collection of books was moved to Novi Sad before World War II. [Tanaka Issei] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
