...However, it was not until HS Parkes took up his post as the second envoy to Japan in 1865 (Keio 1) that efforts began to be made to learn the Japanese language, come into contact with Japanese wise men and classics, and gain an accurate understanding of its culture and history. As was later described as the "Parkes School," many of his subordinates, including EM Sato, WG Aston, Algernon Bertram Freeman-Mitford (1837-1916), Francis Ottiwell Adams (1825-89), John Harrington Gubbins (1852-1929), and Joseph Henry Longford (1849-1925), were trained to be Japan experts in their own fields. Also in the vicinity of this "school" were military personnel Frederick Victor Dickins (1838-1915), Francis Brinkley (1841-1912), and linguist B. H. Chamberlain.
