Turning - Turning

Japanese:
Turning - Turning
This refers to the technique of turning wood on a potter's wheel or lathe to make round vessels such as bowls, bowls, and trays, and the products produced by doing so. The Hyakuman Shoto Pagoda at Horyu-ji Temple is a famous example of ancient turned wood. Potters' wheels have been used since ancient times, but the hand- and foot-turned wheels that remain today in woodworker communities such as Kimigahata in Shiga Prefecture are probably close to the original. Their use has already been confirmed in wooden vessels such as high cups and bowls excavated from the Yayoi period Karako ruins in Nara Prefecture. Turning is the technique that allows for the greatest amount of woodworking, so in regions where woodworking is popular, in addition to specialization according to the type of wood, the work is divided into individual processes such as cutting the wood, rough sawing, and finishing sawing.
