Unzen azalea - Unzen azalea

Japanese: ウンゼンツツジ - うんぜんつつじ
Unzen azalea - Unzen azalea

An evergreen shrub of the Ericaceae family (APG classification: Ericaceae). It grows to 1-2 meters tall, with thin, well-branched branches. The leaves are alternate, elliptical, 1-1.8 cm long, small, pointed at both ends, and covered with brown hairs. The autumn leaves are small and grow in clusters at the ends of the branches. From April to May, small, pale purple, funnel-shaped flowers bloom at the ends of the branches, 1.2-1.6 cm in diameter. The corolla is divided into five lobes, has spots on the upper surface, and has five stamens that extend outside the corolla along with the long style. The fruit is oval and about 5 mm long. It is found in the mountains of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, west of Mount Amagi in Shizuoka Prefecture, and in Kagoshima. It does not grow wild on Mount Unzen in Kyushu, from which the plant takes its name. The white-flowered azalea variety has white flowers and is found in the Rokko Mountains in Hyogo Prefecture and the Katsuragi Mountains in Osaka Prefecture. Although it is a sun-loving tree, it can also grow in partial shade and is used as a garden tree.
