Rice - Shomai

Rice made by pounding unhulled rice or grains to remove the husks. It is also called "tsukisine." One bundle of unhulled rice is equivalent to one tou of grain, and pounding it gives 5 sho of tsukisine rice. According to the regulations, rice tax was to be pounded and sent to Kyoto as annual rice tax to be used as food for the central government officials, but in reality, rice was used instead. In the 9th century, to make up for the shortage of rice, rice tax was pounded and sent to Kyoto as annual rice tax. Since tsukisine rice was a heavy currency, nearby countries and countries with convenient shipping routes were used to transport rice to the capital.

穎稲(えいとう)あるいは穀(こく)を舂(つ)いて籾穀(もみがら)を取り除いた米。「舂米(つきしね)」ともいう。穎稲一束は穀1斗に相当し、それを舂くと舂米5升が得られる。令の規定では、年料舂米(ねんりょうしょうまい)として田租(でんそ)を舂いて京進し、中央官司の官人の食料にあてることになっていたが、実際には出挙稲(すいことう)が用いられた。9世紀になると庸米の不足を補うために年料租舂米として田租が舂かれて京進されるようになった。なお、舂米は重貨なので近国や海運に便利な国が運京国にあてられた。
