The capital of Brunei, located on the north coast of Borneo in Southeast Asia. Population 50,000 (1995). Located 15km up the river from the coast, it is known for a mosque with a golden minaret and the large floating settlements surrounding it. The people who live on the water are mostly urban workers and enjoy a high standard of living. The city has grown rapidly since the 1960s due to the domestic oil and natural gas mining boom, and the city center on land has been developed, with a modern international hotel opening in 1982, but it is one of the most expensive cities in Southeast Asia.

東南アジア，ボルネオ島北岸にあるブルネイの首都。人口5万(1995)。海岸から川を15kmさかのぼった地にあり，黄金色のミナレット(尖塔)をもつモスクと，それを取り囲む大水上集落群で知られる。水上生活者は都市労働者が主体で，生活水準が高い。国内の石油，天然ガスの採掘景気で1960年代より急成長し，陸上の市街地も整備され，82年に国際級の近代的ホテルも開かれたが，物価の高さでは東南アジア屈指の都市である。
