The core population of Kyrgyzstan. Also called Hkara Kirgiz. There are about 2.38 million people living in Kyrgyzstan, about 150,000 in Uzbekistan, and about 130,000 in China. Their language belongs to the Kipchak group of Turkic languages. Their ancestors lived in the upper reaches of the Yenisei River, and are recorded in Chinese historical documents as "Kenkun" and "Hekkun". Originally they lived a nomadic life, but are now settled and engaged in agriculture and heavy industry in cities. Their religion is Islam.
