Acanthus - Acanthus

Japanese:
Acanthus - Acanthus

A general term for the genus Acanthaceae (APG classification: Acanthaceae). Perennial herbs or small shrubs, with about 20 species distributed in southern Europe. A representative species is A. mollis L., which is planted in gardens. The leaves are shiny, beautiful basal leaves that resemble thistles and are about 60 cm long and 30 cm wide. From August to September, they grow flower spikes about 1 meter long, with spikes of purple-white lip-shaped flowers. It is a very hardy perennial herb, but its cold resistance is somewhat poor. In the Tokyo area, it can survive the winter outdoors, but in cold years it will freeze to death if frost protection or soil is not provided. It is propagated by dividing the plant in April to May.

The leaves of this species are beautifully sculpted, and in Europe they were used as stylized acanthus ornaments to decorate the column crowns of ancient Greek and Roman Corinthian and Composite architecture.
