Sugawara Manor - Sugawara no Sho

Japanese:
Sugawara Manor - Sugawara no Sho
This is the oldest manor in the territory of Kitano-sha (Kitano Tenmangu) in Kyoto, located in the area of Sugawara and Suginoya in Shio-cho (now Hōdatsu Shimizu-cho), Ishikawa Prefecture, Hakui County, Noto Province. It was originally the private land of resident Hiroyuki, but was donated to the Kokuga (provincial government office) in exchange for exemption from paying official tribute. In 1114, Noto no Kami Fujiwara no Motoyori donated it to Kitano-sha as a place of constant lighting, and it was established. According to the donation letter from that time, the donated land of Sugawara Yasu was 50 cho, of which 20 cho was Gensaku and 30 cho was Aranya. This donation letter is considered an important historical document for understanding the establishment and nature of the manors that were donated. Nagakatsu, the executive officer of Kitano-sha, who received the donation, issued a certificate for Sugawara Manor for constant lighting use of 20 koku. However, according to the 1221 "Noto no Kuni Ota Bun," the land was established in 1185, and the number of fields was over 23 cho. In August 1304, when the shrine building was destroyed by a heavy rainstorm, it became a construction fee office in the same year. Furthermore, from the 1360s onwards, it became a "Joshiki no Shinryo" (shrine territory) with a "three-year one-year fee office," and the land holdings of the head of the Sugawara family and the shrine affairs were divided in half. However, both the head and shrine affairs portions were eventually transferred to Shobai-in, one of the three families of shrine officials who served Kitano Shrine under Manshu-in, the head priest of Kitano Shrine, and at the end of the 14th century, it became one yen land holding of the same temple. After that, it maintained its land holdings until the end of the Middle Ages, despite repeated requests for land from the magistrate and direct management, and suffering from the seizure of land by the shugo and the failure to pay taxes from local lords.
