Saigū ruins - Saiguato

Japanese: 斎宮跡 - さいぐうあと

This is a nationally designated historic site located in Takekawa, Saigū, Meiwa-cho, Taki-gun, Mie Prefecture. It consisted of the palace of the Saio who served Ise Jingū, and an office called Saigū-ryō that handled its affairs. It attracted attention during excavation surveys conducted in conjunction with a housing development plan in the late 1960s, and surveys to confirm its extent revealed that it covered a vast area of approximately 2km east to west, 700m north to south, and an area of approximately 140ha. Remains from the Nara period are concentrated in the west, while those from the Heian period spread from the center to the east. At present, the locations of the thirteen offices, including the Nain, Nakain, and Main Shrine, are unknown, but the excavated buildings are post-hole buildings arranged in a fixed direction, and have been rebuilt many times.

三重県多気郡明和町斎宮，竹川にある国指定史跡。伊勢神宮に奉仕する斎王の宮殿と，その事務をとりあつかう斎宮寮とよばれる官衙（かんが）からなっていた。昭和40年代後半の宅地造成計画にともなう発掘調査で注目され，範囲確認調査の結果，東西約2km，南北約700m，面積約140haの広大な面積を占めることがわかった。奈良時代の遺構は西部に集中し，平安時代の遺構は中央部から東部に広がる。現状では内院，中院，主神司をはじめとする十三司の所在場所は不明であるが，発掘された建物は一定方向に配列された掘立柱建物で，たびたび建て替えられている。
