[Died] August 26, 1979, Helsinki Finnish novelist. Born to a university professor, he began writing at the age of 17. While studying theology and philosophy at the University of Helsinki, he published novels that attracted the attention of the literary world. He continued to work energetically on translation, novels, plays, and poetry. He first worked as a member of the modern literary movement "The Fire-Bearers", and his breakthrough work was Suuri illusioni (1928). His dramatic Vieras mies tuli taloon (37) is considered his best work, but it was his historical novels on ancient culture that made him famous worldwide. His epic novels, such as Sinuhe, egyptiainen (45), which depicts the disappointment of an ancient Egyptian physician, and Turms, kuolematon (55), which deals with faith and philosophy against the background of ancient Etruscan history, became bestsellers overseas. Member of the Academy of Finland.

フィンランドの小説家。大学教授の子として生れ，17歳で創作を始め，ヘルシンキ大学で神学と哲学を学ぶかたわら小説を発表して，文壇の注目を集めた。その後，翻訳，小説，戯曲，詩にと精力的な活動を続けた。初め近代文芸運動「火を掲げる者」グループで活躍，『大いなる幻想』 Suuri illusioni (1928) が出世作となった。ドラマチックな『見知らぬ男が家に来た』 Vieras mies tuli taloon (37) が最高傑作とされているが，その名を世界的にしたのは古代文化史的歴史小説群で，古代エジプト人医師の失意を描いた『エジプト人シヌヘ』 Sinuhe，egyptiläinen (45) ，エトルリアの古代史を背景に信教と哲学を主題とする『不死のトゥルムス』 Turms，kuolematon (55) などの大河小説が国外でベストセラーになった。フィンランド・アカデミー会員。
