Waltari, Mika Toimi
Born: September 19, 1908, Helsinki
[Died] August 26, 1979, Helsinki Finnish novelist. Born to a university professor, he began writing at the age of 17. While studying theology and philosophy at the University of Helsinki, he published novels that attracted the attention of the literary world. He continued to work energetically on translation, novels, plays, and poetry. He first worked as a member of the modern literary movement "The Fire-Bearers", and his breakthrough work was Suuri illusioni (1928). His dramatic Vieras mies tuli taloon (37) is considered his best work, but it was his historical novels on ancient culture that made him famous worldwide. His epic novels, such as Sinuhe, egyptiainen (45), which depicts the disappointment of an ancient Egyptian physician, and Turms, kuolematon (55), which deals with faith and philosophy against the background of ancient Etruscan history, became bestsellers overseas. Member of the Academy of Finland.
