Saline solution

Also known as physiological saline solution. Because cell membranes are semipermeable, if the osmotic pressure of the extracellular fluid differs from that inside the cell, the cell will swell or shrink. This refers to an aqueous sodium chloride solution that has the same osmotic pressure as extracellular fluids, particularly serum, that are not affected in this way. As a physiological salt solution, it is used to dilute body fluids such as blood, and as a solvent for injectable drugs. The concentration varies depending on the species, but a 0.9% NaCl solution is used for mammals.

生理的食塩水ともいう．細胞膜は半透性の膜であるから，細胞外液の浸透圧が内部と異なると，細胞が膨張したり，萎縮したりする．そのような影響のない細胞外液とくに血清と浸透圧の同じ塩化ナトリウム水溶液をいう．生理的塩類溶液として，血液などの体液の希釈や注射薬の溶剤に用いられる．濃度は生物種によって異なるが，ほ乳類に対しては0.9％ NaCl溶液が用いられる．
