A region in central Italy facing the Adriatic Sea. Area 4,438 km2, population 330,000 (1994). In 1963, it was separated from the Abruzzo and Molise regions and elevated to a region. It is made up of the provinces of Campobasso and Isernia, and 90% of the region is in highlands. The capital is Campobasso (population 48,291, 1981). The main industries are agriculture and livestock farming, with 46.6% of the working population engaged in this. In the 20 years from 1951 to 1971, 21% of the total population left the region to work. In the Middle Ages, it was part of the Lombard Duchy of Benevento, and during the Norman Kingdom of Sicily it became the Comitatus Molisii administrative region, which is the basis for today's regional divisions.
