Born in Doronrijp in the Netherlands, he was a successful painter in the British Victorian era. He studied at the Academy in Antwerp, and settled in London after 1870. He painted historical scenes and customs of ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt with vibrant colors and outstanding realism. He was interested in archaeology and his compositional style emphasized the expanse of space, and he also conducted rigorous historical research.
