A general term for invertebrates belonging to the phylum Rotifera. Most live in freshwater, but some live in moist soil, among dry moss, and in the sea, and it is said that there are more than one million individuals in 1 liter of coastal sand and mud. There are 1,500 to 2,000 known species worldwide, and about 170 species in Japan. The body length is 0.05 to 2 mm and consists of three parts: the head, body, and legs. The surface of the body is covered with a thick cuticle or a soft integument. There is a ring organ at the front end of the body, and the cilia here look like a rotating wheel, hence the name rotifer. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
