Order Pelecaniformes, family Heronidae. Total length 63-68cm. A white-bodied heron, similar to the Little Egret, but differs in its yellow bill (the Little Egret's is black) and short, bushy crest on the back of its head. Its toes are yellow like the Little Egret's. In its winter plumage, it loses its crest. It breeds along the coasts of southern Primorsky Krai, northeast North Korea, eastern China, and the Yellow and Bohai Seas of the western Korean peninsula, and winters along the coasts of Vietnam, the Philippines, and Indonesia, but its population is small. It occasionally migrates to Japan as a migratory or wintering bird, and is sometimes seen on tidal flats, river mouths, and large rice fields on the coast. In 1987, about 50 of them were found breeding with the Little Egret on the Korean New Island in the Republic of Korea.
