A city in the central south of Jiangsu Province, China. Population 270,000 (1994). It is located on the north bank of the Yangtze River, east of Yangzhou. The delta on the north bank of the Yangtze River grew slower than the delta on the south bank, and during the Han dynasty this area had only just become land. Salt was produced in the low-lying marshes on the coast, and in the early Western Han dynasty, King Liu Bi of Wu (215-154 BC) promoted development, building a canal for irrigation (the Yunyan Canal, the precursor to today's Yangtze Canal). At the same time, Hailing County was established here, and although it was abolished for a time, it continued to exist until the Yuan dynasty.
