Masugata Koi Shell Mound

Japanese: 桝形囲貝塚 - ますがたがこいかいづか

A Yayoi period shell mound in Masugata-koi, Oshiro, Tagajo City, Miyagi Prefecture. It is located in the eastern part of Tagajo City, on a sand dune. The shell layer is thin, and it seems to have been a site containing artifacts including shells and animal bones, but it is now completely destroyed. It was excavated in 1919, and distinctive pottery was unearthed, including a jar with concentric circle patterns in the worn-out Jomon style, and a jar with comb-drawing patterns and Jomon patterns. It was initially thought to be pottery from the end of the Jomon period, but was later found to be Yayoi pottery, named Masugata-koi style, and became a type of material for the middle Yayoi period in the southern Tohoku region.

宮城県多賀城市大代字桝形囲にある弥生時代の貝塚。多賀城市の東部に位置し，砂丘に立地する。貝層は薄く，貝殻や獣骨をまじえる遺物包含地であったようで，現在は完全に破壊されている。1919年に発掘され，磨消（すりけし）縄文による同心円文をもつ壺や，櫛描文，縄文のある甕など著しい特色をしめす土器が出土した。はじめは縄文時代末の土器と考えられたが，のち弥生土器であることがわかり，桝形囲式と命名され，東北地方南部の弥生時代中期の標式資料となった。
