Weingartner

Japanese:
Weingartner
Austrian conductor and composer. Born in Zara, Dalmatia. After studying music in Graz and Leipzig, he studied under F. Liszt in Weimar in 1883. After conducting in Königsberg (now Kaliningrad), Maiheim, Berlin, Munich, etc., he succeeded Mahler as conductor of the Vienna Court Opera (later the Vienna State Opera) from 1908 to 1911, and conductor of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra from 1908 to 1927. During this time he also held the positions of general music director in Darmstadt and director of the Vienna Volksoper, and was appointed music director of the Vienna State Opera again from 1935 to 1936. After the Nazi annexation of Austria (1938), he worked in Paris and London. His performances, which excluded excessive romanticism and clearly brought out the formal beauty of the works, had a great influence on later conductors. In 1937, he came to Japan and gave seven concerts with the New Symphony Orchestra (now the NHK Symphony Orchestra) in Tokyo, Osaka and other cities, which attracted much attention as the first time a world-famous conductor had performed in Japan. The Weingartner Prize, which was awarded to Japanese orchestral works at that time -- Matsudaira Yorinori, Hayasaka Fumio, Odaka Naotada and others have received it -- was a major stimulus to the Japanese composition world.
