A perennial plant of the Asteraceae family. The stem is thick and short, with basal leaves growing in clusters at the tip. The basal leaves are obovate with rounded tips, about 15 cm long, entire, thick and soft. The petioles are thick and 5 mm in diameter. From September to November, the branches grow diagonally upward from the axils of the basal leaves, reaching a height of about 50 cm, and produce dense inflorescences. The flower heads are yellow and 1 cm in diameter. They grow on coastal rocks, distributed from the southern Kanto region to the Tokaido and the Izu Seven Islands. The name is said to be a variation of "wata (sea) vegetable." The closely related Hosoba wadan has thinner basal leaves.
